Cover Layout Decisions/Photoshop

As I created the magazine front cover I changed some aspects of the layout from my flat plan. These are some of the parts I changed and some I kept the same.

I decided to make the overall look more simplistic by using one graphic(the x) and using less text. The text on the top left and right of the magazine has stayed but the lower text on the left has been replaced by an anchor that links to the picture. I have added a pull quote to the bottom on the cover and used a blue box to link the black and blue tones together. I decided to turn the bar code on to the side to as it fits nicely and goes with the minimalist effect the cover has.The image has stayed in the center of the cover as I wanted it to be the main attraction but I have put some text over it. The masthead has remand in its place but there is less empty space on the sides, this gives it a tidy look. Overall I think I have kept to my flat plan, as I have only made small changes in order to make the overall look more simple and minimalist to achieve a indie-grunge look

Here are some print screes of the process I took when working on layout:

Final Shot taken/mise-en-scene

This is the image I decided to use for my front cover. It shows the two models with their legs and arms in a Meditating/Yoga position, I think this shows the audience that the Artists lean on each other and work together to create music. The pose can also be considered Indie as poses like it can be seen on many Indie social media platforms. I choice to take the image in front of a white screen, with strong white lighting to show the artist faces and make them the center of the picture.

I put the models in matching/slimier clothing to show they are one. I choice to put them in Indie Grunge clothing which is dark but also washed out. They wear Denham jackets, black skinny jeans, black and white stripped tops and cloth black Creepers shoes. By putting them in these clothing it shows the audience that the band are Indie and that the genre of Indie is a sense of style as well as a form of music.

The shot itself is a full shot taken from and eye level angle, to show the audience that they will get to see the band from an eye level, meaning they get to read the magazine and feel closer to the artist.

Front Cover Test Shots

This is a video compiled of test shots for my front cover, they were all taken on a white background and feature two models(Cosmic Haze). I really like the Indie outfits and makeup I used, I think along with the quirky poses they make good Indie shots.

Flat Plan Feedback

In this post I will be discussing the feedback I received on my drafts for my magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. Below is an image of some of my class members aged 16-17 looking at my drafts and discussing what elements they liked and elements I could improve on, they later wrote some of their comments in the comment section of my blog. This was very helpful as my target audience will be aged 11-25, so I got to have a look at what my target audience think of my magazine concept.

The feedback I received:

Holly:"I like how simplistic the overall look is as it could make the magazine  look quite professional. The theme of the graphics, such as the infinity sign and crosses, make the magazine suit the genre of Indie"

Weronika: "I like the graphics and images used but as an indie magazine I think it would look nicer if it was more simplistic"

From this I  have found that I need to make my layouts more simple and less cluttered  to make the Magazine more Indie and that the graphics and work well with the theme of Indie

Flat Plan Draft

These are my flat plans for my music magazine "Indie Kids", I have included the front cover, contents page and double page spread. While creating these I thought about the conventions of a Indie music magazine and normal music magazine, and how I could involve them in my design while adding original ideas also.

I was inspired by 'The Fly' and 'Indie' when creating the front cover, I wanted something simple that had an indie feel to it. I centred the models to the middle of my front cover like 'The Fly' as I feel this makes the magazine eye catching and shows that they will be the main part of the magazine. I also added graphics like 'The Fly', I really like the idea of graphics as they add an element of fun and movement to the page. I was inspired by 'Indie' Magazine when choosing the text as I liked the uses of thin text, because it does not draw the attention away from the models but still fits in with the indie theme. I also put my masthead in the middle of the magazine (like 'Indie'), this is not commonly seen on magazines (most have the title spread at the top or on one side), I decided to do this as indie is a genre that does not follow conventions and goes out to find something that is not commonly done so I feel like putting the masthead in the middle will represent the genre of indie well. I put my models in indie clothing to continue the theme, this can also be see in 'Indie' as the model wears accessories and clothing associated with the indie genre.

For my contents page I was inspired by 'Q' and 'NME' when drawing out my drafts. I made the choice to have the word "Contents" at the top, as inspired by 'Q' and the words "This Week" as inspired by 'NME', I think this allows the audience to know what the page is for and informers them that the magazine is weekly. I also continued the graphics on to this page and with kept the "This Week' text the same as the masthead to link the front cover and the contents page together. I put a thin box on one side of the page like both magazines added images like them to make sure the page remains interesting and shows the verity their is to offer in the magazine. As inspired by 'Q' I made a small review box as from my research I have done I found audience's like to be informed of all the details in the magazine and appreciate extra touches. I want to give all the pages a running colour so that on every page their will be one matching colour, this will help to make all the pages link nicely together.

My double page spread was inspired by these spreads from 'Q' Magazine (left) and 'NME' (right). I liked how both magazines had one main photo on the left of the spread as it draws readers in because of the size and makes it seem like there is less writing(this may be appealing to readers who do not want to spend a long time reading but still want to know about the artist). I also used the concept of large lettering from both magazines as I make the firs letter of the sentence large, this creates an idea of importance and draws in reader to make them read more. From 'NME' I decided to use the large quote, I like this because it feels personal as if the artist themselves is reaching out to the audience with their words. I also likes the use of graphics and decided to continue the theme of my graphics when I saw that the 'NME' spread used graphics to add character to the page.
