DPS Layout

In this blog I will be discussing the layout of my double page spread and some of the changes I made, and also looking at the magazines double page spreads that inspired me.

This is my final double page spread, The video above explains what changes I made from my initial layout and what aspects I kept the same.

These are the Indie music magazine double page spreads that inspired me:

This DPS is from Wire magazine, I really like the minimal look to these pages and I wanted to try and create a minimal look like this. As you can see the image goes over half the page, I have done this also as I think it looks neat and helps the test and image link together

I also really liked Q's DPS of Lana Del Rey, I particularly like the use of the large letter which I used as inspiration for my large C in the background of my DPS. I also really like the lines on the top of the page where the artist name is written I used this idea for my page also as it in simplistic and geometric which is a big part of Indie designs.

This DPS is from Clash, I like the use of titles at the top of the page above the interview I think this is effective as it gives the audience an idea about what they are about to read, and draws them in to read and find out more.

Artist Interview

This is the edited final artist interview, I was inspired by other Indie music magazines when looking  at format such as Wire. The research I did really helped as I learnt that the tone of the interview was very important and it helped me to decide on what kind of an interview were most commonly seen in Indie music magazines. I wanted to have a calm, relaxed tone in the interview and to make sure that the focal point was the music not the personal lives of the artists unless the two intertwined.

So your mum and dad work in the line of music, have they taught you any tricks of the trade?

Well we both learnt the art of performing music and enticing the audience from our mother who is a stage actress/singer and our dad taught us to play many instruments such as the piano, guitar and many more.

Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?

We love many indie artists; we love The xx, The 1975, Daughter, London Grammar, Melanie Martinez, Yuna and several more. Although our music is different and we think does not replicate any other, we still feel as though these artists have helped us shape our music.

Comic Haze is a great band name as is the album title ‘Galaxy in a Glass Bottle’. How did the theme of space come about?

We both adore space, we traveled a lot as kids and the only thing that really stayed the same in our travels was the sky. From a young age, we star gazed and studied night and day and that has influenced a lot of our music. The band name, the album, and the songs are a reflection of our childhood and the love we still hold for space.

You are both verbal when it comes to the discussion of the Indie genre, what is your response to those who say Indie is dead?

I think our response is simple, Indie is not dead, and it grows stronger with every new sub-genre and musician who is ready to create new innovative music. I think that’s what we have always aimed to do, to prove to people that indie is so much more then what they think it can be.

How do you reach out to the fans?

Social media is a platform we love, things like Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, Instagram and Snapchat allow us to have communication with the amazingly beautiful fans who we thank every day for helping us get where we are today. We also love to meet the fans, so we try to organise loads of meet and greets when possible.

Fashion is something I hear you enjoy. How would you describe your styles?

Fashion is a big thing for us, we like to show how the genre of indie heavily influences our fashion, I would say that our style is Indie Grunge, denim, black jeans, graphic tees and some killer shoes. We actually have been designing a clothing line for H&M, which will be coming out very soon. We cannot wait to share our fashion style with the fans, and hope they love it as much as we do.

Are you girls thinking of going on tour any time soon?

That is definitely something we would want to do and there has been discussion of it, we are hoping to tour in a couple of months. We really want the fans to hear the album live and a tour would be the perfect way to share it with them.

DPS Image Decisions

This is the image I used in my DPS and the reasons I choice it.

This is a image I was thinking about using, I like the use of a birds eye view image and the natural Indie vibes the picture had but it did not have any mis-en-scene linking to music and I wanted the image to be more musically related and was cautious not to make it look like a fashion magazine double page spread.

I may consider putting the image on the page but if it makes the page overcrowded and takes away the minimal Indie look that runs through the magazine I will leave it out

Below are the other image I took but did not use either because I did not think they matched the magazines tone or because they did not show a musical aspect.

DPS Stand First

I looked at two stand first's, one was from Wire Magazine from an interview of the indie band Invisible Jukebox and the second one was from Billboard and was an interview with The 1975s (Indie band) frontman Matt Healy.

Both Stand Firsts began by introducing the band members and then proceeded to tell a brief history of the bands involving where and when they began and the evolution of their music. Billboard also described the singers appearance and the location of the interview, this makes the reader feel as though they are their listening to the interview as it takes place. The two Stand Firsts were rather short lasting around two paragraphs long, but they both set the tone of the interview. In the Wires Stand first we can tell the interview will be solely on the music but with the Billboard one we can tell from the talk of personal affair the interview will be more based on the artist as a person rather then the music they produce.

From my research I have created my Stand First for my Indie band Cosmic Haze:

Cosmic Haze is a sister duo formed of Ava (18) and Aurora (17) Skys. They were formed in 2012 in London. They are Indie/Alternative bands, who are shaking up the Indie genre by mixing different sub-genres to create new and innovative music. The girls have music in their blood with both of their parents coming from a musical background; in fact, it was their parents who encouraged the girls to pursue a carrier in music and helped them begin. The girls started busking on the streets of London at the ages of 15 and 14.

This month the girls released their first Album ‘Galaxy in a Glass Bottle’, it has eight remarkable, award winning songs on it and has been a smash hit with fans and critics.

DPS Market Research

This is a mood board of four different interviews I read and watched. All are interviews with Indie musicians.

From this research, I have found that interviews styles can very even in the same genre, the laid-back tone can be seen in many interviews, and I think this style suites my magazines tone the best. I think people enjoy knowing something personal and exclusive about the artist such as their opinions on a topic or new and upcoming activates they are taking part in.

Contents Page Image Choices

I decided to use to other Indie artist on my contents page, here are the images I choice of them and reasons for why I choice them.

This is a mid shot. I choice this image as I like the way the model is looking at the camera but one of her eyes is covered giving an element of mystery making the reader want to read more. The model is wearing a dark scarf and a blue jacket, this links to Indie fashion.

I like the white background as it matches the monochromatic colour scheme of the front page.

This is the second image I will use it is of another Indie artist. It is a mid shot with the artist looking down, adding an element of mystery, the model also wears a Denham shirt. The model has whiskers on her face as her name is Kitty and her branding is cat whiskers.

Cover Layout Decisions/Photoshop

As I created the magazine front cover I changed some aspects of the layout from my flat plan. These are some of the parts I changed and some I kept the same.

I decided to make the overall look more simplistic by using one graphic(the x) and using less text. The text on the top left and right of the magazine has stayed but the lower text on the left has been replaced by an anchor that links to the picture. I have added a pull quote to the bottom on the cover and used a blue box to link the black and blue tones together. I decided to turn the bar code on to the side to as it fits nicely and goes with the minimalist effect the cover has.The image has stayed in the center of the cover as I wanted it to be the main attraction but I have put some text over it. The masthead has remand in its place but there is less empty space on the sides, this gives it a tidy look. Overall I think I have kept to my flat plan, as I have only made small changes in order to make the overall look more simple and minimalist to achieve a indie-grunge look

Here are some print screes of the process I took when working on layout:
